Didn’t Sight Pole; Smacked Same
A precious rubber tire was about all that could be salvaged yesterday when a truck loaded with pumpernickel crashed into a light pole at Stanton and Pitt Sts. The pole was broken off. Photos by Weegee, PM.

October 12, 1943 was a twofer Tuesday for Weegee. In 1940 the Reliable Thrift Shop was at 760 Third Avenue (between 40th and 41st streets). Perhaps the Reliable Thrift Shop went out of business in 1944. An ad in the Brooklyn Eagle, June 18, 1944, states: “RELIABLE THRIFT SHOP: good, clean stock: sacrifice $300 everything. 1361 3d Ave., 78th St., N.Y.C.” Weegee photographed and PM published. Throughout the early 40s, and in his early forties, Weegee captured events, like fires and accidents (that were often not covered by other newspapers, like these two) on the home front during wartime, humorously, tirelessly, and reliably.

E. 37th St. Scandal
Naked as the day her creator painted her on the canvas, this beautiful thing leaves 167 E. 37th St. during a fire there yesterday. Several other paintings were rescued from the flames.
